When visiting Whyalla the charters will venture out to man made and artificial reefs around the Spencer Gulf and show you intricate hiding holes where big snapper are found. Devoted anglers often travel from all over Australia to catch these fish, being guided by a local is a great treat.

The depth of the gulf waters varies 6 and 25 meters and temperatures are typically in the range of 11 to 25 degrees. Depending on the time of year your skipper will use local knowledge to target the areas that the schools of fish frequent. During summer months smaller snapper are found in larger schools and are targeted during their spiractic feeding frenzies at sunset and sunrise in shallower waters. The larger fish are then targeted after or before these times to ensure a variety of sizes are caught for the energetic anglers. When fishing in the cooler months your large fish ‘Big Reds’ are caught to the bag limit and then other species may be targeted.

The gulf waters are also well known for the frequent visits by great whites which may give you the opportunity to witness a spectacular specimen in its natural environment. You can go diving with the Great Whites in the waters around Port Lincoln which is further south of Whyalla.

Whyalla is famous for its local friendly dolphins that have been visiting the local marina daily for the past years.

  2. G’day Craig,

Give Steve a call. He is a top fisho and a really down to earth young lad who i’ve had the pleasure of knowing andfishing with for the last 7 or 8 years. As far as accommodation he will help you out and he will try his hardest to get a big (10kg+) red for all aboard.

That time of year is not bad here with plenty of school sized fish and mixed big boys getting around. Our average “big” schoolies” are in the 6 – 9kg bracket and biggies are 10 – 15kg. Every now and then a stomper of 15kg or more is landed. Autumn also sees plenty of other SA species available should you be content with the snapper you have caught…

    Regards,

    Brad Heath.
